A Very Sad Day for Rock

It would appear that my spiritual rock home, Edwards No 8 nightclub in Birmingham has burnt down after a fire was started in the mens toilets.

Eddies was for many years before I left Brum THE club to hang out. The people, the music, the drink prices were all awesome. For me it became the epitome of Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll and had a lasting effect on me.

It was also the place I realised that Dance music could also be really cool and heavy. It was the first place i went to that would play White Zombie and Ministry alongside, The Prodigy, Josh Wink and Underworld.

It also reaffirmed my faith in the concept of a decent rock club in the last few months when I revisited it and discovered that not every rock club at the mo is full of whiney emo 'people'.

As far as I can tell this loss leaves Brum with only the Carling Academy for an alternative club night. Although it is a great concert venue, its club nights leave much to be desired.

I shall be listening to very heavy music this afternoon and remembering some wicked times.

penguin of death

Saw it on the news last night, after reading about it in [info]recycledgoth's LJ.

Only got to go there once, when I was up visiting [info]elthorn and others, and it was a brilliant night. Such a shame.

Yeah, don't know if you remember Nathan from Aber (or were even there when he was), big member of RocSoc and WARPS, good DJ too. Anyway, read about it in his LJ as he was in there during the fire, grabbing his hat and coat and clearing one of the fire exits on his way out:

The only Rock club I've been to in the past few years is the one Rach took us to a few times in Cardiff. I know what you mean about Emo kids...the music was about 1 part Rock to 8 parts chart indie stuff. Not terrible stuff, but not what I want from a Rock night.

Jeez...I mean, there were Rugby shirts and Fred Perry stuff combined with dire hairdo's and even one girl in pastel Britney-clone gear. Barely a Metal T-shirt in sight. *sigh*

Sounds like Sweatro's (Metros). Its used to have a decent rock night at one point but they discovered they make more money from chart rock and indie classics.

There is still the odd night ofcharcoal t-shirt wearing, large bearded, leather jacket clad metalers in Cardiff but its usual in a sweaty, cramped hovel of a club somewhere. The only decent venue is down the bay and it plays tripe.

Doh! Of course that was meant to be a reply to the original post, not yours, mainly because you've never met Nathan, nor have you ever been (to my knowledge) to Aberystwyth.

Don't mind me, I'm just incompetent :)

Speaking of rock...

I have been thinking about the club night thang and come to the decision that we need to scrap the idea and come up with a better one. Theres too many new shite nights in Cardiff and people wont brave another. Each has their commited members (they should be commited!) and to gain any sort of large following would take a night of large magnitude which I don't think we can deliver on a shoe string budget.

Following the night we did at O'Neils, I think we should start doing more of them as I think we'll get a lot more regulars who will turn up knowing the bands are not gonna be crap and knowing there will be a fun crowd.

I think 3 bands and dj until about 1am could work (I don't think people want to stay until 2am and its better to leave them wanting).

What do you think?

Oh! By the way!

Can you do another band/DJ night on December 14th?
It'll be 8pm until 1.30am at the same place.
There will be 5 acts.
Are you willing to MC too?

Awww, are you going to sit in a room on your own for 3 days like you did when Layne Staley died?

No this is a whole different vibe. Edwards was very very cool but it burning down is nothing compared to the death of Layne Staley
